The use of psychological services can help with a variety of life challenges and mental health related concerns, by understanding the issues through a different framework, and developing skills and strategies to change existing patterns of thinking, acting and reacting. Your goals for treatment will dictate the toolkit that may be useful in meeting these goals to assist you in your current challenges. Depending on what it is that you have come to work on will depend on whether treatment is short-term or more long-term.
Making the first appointment
Starting the process of seeing a psychologist can be quite challenging. If you have any questions or would like some information about whether psychological sessions might help or how to go about it feel free to contact me on 0400 197 182. This discussion will be a ‘confidential consult to help you decide on what is the most suitable support for you at this time’
It can be good to speak with at least 2 psychologists before the first appointment. During these conversations you can ask questions about the location, availability of appointments, and anything else you want to know. This can sometimes give you a sense of which one you feel more comfortable with.
The first 2-3 appointments will involve discussion of your expectations and goals for treatment. I will want to find out about you and your life. At this time, it is also good for you to be checking to make sure you feel like the treatment will be helpful for you. If you don’t think I am the right therapist for you, your GP will be happy to help you find someone who is so you can get the most out of your sessions and achieve your goals for treatment.
The number of total sessions varies with each individual. Treatment is tailored to meet your individual needs and goals, this is typically a reflection of what you hope to achieve and what you hope to take from therapy. I will discuss with you the treatment plan to meet your goals and will typically offer you a regular appointment time to ensure you are able to plan ahead.
